Suggested Talking Points for Phone Call or Email
Hello, my name is [insert name]. I am a teacher/educator/parent from [insert school name].
The Governor and Legislature are debating last-minute changes to the Independent Study law as part of the budget negotiations. The current proposal is highly problematic.
It is important that the Legislature and Governor not unintentionally shutter programs for alternative education or at-promise students. Additionally, if the state is going to change the law, it needs to give enough time for families and schools to adapt and revise Independent Study programs without disrupting education plans and funding.
A broad coalition of education groups sent a letter with potential amendments to address our concerns. Remarkably, the groups representing school labor, management, and charter schools are united in asking for these changes.
Please consider these changes as you debate the final budget.
